Poor and needy patients require financial assistance...
Mounting medical expenses are bleeding India’s poor and lower middle-classes. Out-of-pocket expenses still account for bulk of medical spending. Due to high premiums, lower middle-class Indians are unable to opt for higher health insurance cover that is needed to meet cancer expenses.
Rural poor are either not able to access the benefits of Government health schemes or the amounts paid under such schemes meet the treatment expenses only partially. Hospital expenditure incurred on cancer and other major illnesses pushes millions in villagers into poverty every year.
NGOs provide monetary aid towards treatment costs...
Donations garnered from companies, organisations and individuals are deployed by NGOs towards financial assistance to poor cancer patients. The needy have to approach the NGOs and submit their financial and medical documentation. In case of treatments involving high expenditure, the patient may have to seek assistance from more than one NGO organisation.
Financial help is given through direct payment to hospital providing affordable treatment and no payment is made directly to patient. Some of the NGOs are solely dedicated to provide assistance to cancer-stricken children. NGOs also help underprivileged patients with subsidised or free accommodation in the city where hospital is based. Other organisations provide free food and nutrition to patients and their attendants.
